Product details

The love between Alexandre, a French plantation owner, and Mai, a Vietnamese resistance fighter, began with violence. Happiness came unexpectedly and was short-lived, as the attack on Alexandre's plantation left only their daughter Tam alive. On the streets of Saigon, Louis, the son of a Vietnamese woman and a Black GI, navigates life, having mastered the art of pickpocketing by the age of six. One day, he finds an abandoned baby with rice field-green eyes. He lovingly cares for the girl and names her Em H¿ng, but the end of the war tears them apart. Decades later, Emma-Jade encounters a man at the airport who is both so similar to her and yet so foreign. How do they know each other? Inspired by Operation Babylift, during which Vietnamese children were flown abroad without their parents in 1975, Kim Thúy's novel vividly depicts the fate of these children in concise yet atmospheric imagery. They live with traumatic memories in foreign countries, mostly in adoptive families, and must find their own identity and sense of belonging.
