Product details

The Düsseldorf-based sculptor, draftsman, model maker, and occasional architect Thomas Schütte works in all scales: from a single potato chip on a matchbox to life-sized, high-gloss polished figurative sculptures. His work transcends all categories and gives form to the inconsistencies of the world we live in.

Schütte's works are rooted in minimal and conceptual art and address themes of history, art history, various interpretations, and the question of how art can function in the world. The monograph of the same name provides a comprehensive overview of Thomas Schütte's work from 1975 to the present. It showcases over 100 sculptures, as well as drawings, prints, architectural experiments, and previously unpublished archival material. Essays by Paulina Pobocha, Jennifer Allen, and André Rottmann offer historical and theoretical insights into the complexity of Schütte's work; contributions from Marlene Dumas and Charles Ray reflect on Schütte's significance through a close reading of his oeuvre. Thomas Schütte (*1954) studied under Gerhard Richter and Fritz Schwegler at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He participated in Documenta, the Skulptur Projekte Münster, and the Venice Biennale, where he was awarded the Golden Lion in 2005. His works are part of the collections of major institutions in Europe and North America.
