Product details
Calm North German landscape views, animal scenes with cows, horses and sheep in the Elbe marshes, as well as rural interiors and children's portraits are the preferred motifs of the naturalistic open-air painter Thomas Herbst (1848-1915). A virtuoso colorist, he captured his subjects in tonal palette and intense color. Artistically, he is close to the German Impressionists such as Max Liebermann, who wrote in 1909 about his artist colleague to the two inclined Hamburg Kunsthallen director Alfred Lichtwark: "For my artistic education, I owe the most of my peers to the influence of my friend Thomas Herbst.
