Product details
When Thomas Bernhard purchased the four-sided courtyard in Ohlsdorf, Upper Austria, in 1965, he envisioned a residence suitable for a "thinking and writing prison." The heavily dilapidated building from the early 14th century, which had already been slated for demolition, was transformed by its new owner over the course of ten years into something entirely new: the sophisticated country estate of an eccentric loner, while preserving its proportions and architecture. Every room, every piece of furniture, every selected book served to stage his persona, equipped with exquisite taste. Deeply impressed by this meticulously composed house, André Heller gathers renowned experts to explore Bernhard's passion for staging. What was Thomas Bernhard's relationship, the eternal provocateur and internationally celebrated writer, to questions of fashion and style? How did he live, what did he surround himself with? What was his record collection like? Which books did he choose for his library?.
