In the Banneker Terrace housing estate in Harlem, people know each other. There's Swan, who lives in flat 6B and is in danger of losing his way when his old mate is released from prison. And Mimi, flat 14D, who is bringing up her and Swan's child, waitressing, braiding hair on the side and doesn't know how she's going to cope with the rent increase. Or Ms Dallas, Swan's mother, who accompanies children in need at school and meets a teacher who has his Steinbeck and Shakespeare down pat but has no idea how to deal with his pupils. There are so many others who struggle and fail and get up again and will probably fail again.

tells of a community threatened by the capital of others, by gentrification. A book about the struggle for dignity, the strength and enrichment that a random community can provide, and an urgently needed plea for cohesion in our atomised present.
