A good interview informs, entertains, and reveals something about the person being interviewed. No other genre places higher demands on journalists: in an interview, they must make optimal use of a precisely defined—and almost always too short—time frame. They do not have a second chance, unlike in a report. They must be quick-witted and daring, but they also need to be gentle and, above all, good listeners. They should prepare thoroughly and have learned how to craft an elegant, smoothly readable interview from a spoken conversation filled with many "ums." There is much to know and master in order to bring back a truly informative and witty interview from an appointment with the mayor, an actress, or a football player. The author shares insights from his own experience as a regular interviewer about what to consider and what to avoid, what clothing to wear, and what tables to choose for a conversation.
