Among all addiction disorders, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking are the most widespread and have the most severe consequences: 1.8 million people in Germany are dependent on alcohol, and 8.1 million are smokers. This results in hundreds of subsequent illnesses and over one hundred thousand deaths. Alcohol and tobacco dependence often occur together, as they share similar addiction mechanisms.
