Rarely in history has an institution experienced such a boom as the museum has in recent years. Numerous openings and new concepts have brought this repository of material evidence to the center of humanities reflection. At the same time, a differentiated exhibition practice has developed, providing important impulses for the presentation of knowledge outside of book culture. This introduction describes the historical stages of collection and museum history since the Renaissance and provides an overview of the currently most important theoretical approaches to the phenomenon. Thus, the volume allows for a nuanced view of the museum's 'display space' and unfolds the subtle yet central distinction between museum and exhibition.
