The theory of art today faces enormous challenges. The boundaries between the arts have become as porous as those between art and non-art. But what defines art if it is no longer necessarily determined by the old genres? How can we then compare works in a meaningful way, how can we judge their quality? And what does all this mean for the history of art? What follows from the destabilisation of the boundary between art and reality? Is there still something like a specific politics of art in this situation, and if so, how would it be conceived?
