The study of the semantics of the words in the Qumran texts aims first and foremost to ascertain the theological message of these writings and to present the theological and literary history of the so-called "inter-testamental period". To this end, the three-volume ThWQ takes up the vocabulary of the Qumran texts, its semantic valences and shifts, to a large extent in its entirety. It analyses the further development of the Hebrew language in the intertestamental period, presents the afterlife and reception of Old Testament precepts in the Judaism of the time, makes clear the root soil thus prepared for early Christianity and significant other apocalyptic movements, and raises a "theology of Qumran" in the field of tension between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.
