The City Monastery Zurich is an innovation in urban and Christian spirituality. How did it come about? What have been and are the key milestones of this new yet ancient form of being a church? Hans Strub reflects on the past ten years since the idea and the subsequent founding of the monastery in a snapshot. He sheds light on the current situation, reports on activities and the added value for the church community with which the City Monastery feels connected, and he explores the lived spirituality and hopes for the future. Photographs provide outsiders with insight into the life and work of the City Monastery, while fundamental considerations regarding innovation and future positioning of the City Monastery and church complement the concrete representation. A City Monastery also includes many people: members of the ecumenical living community, the association, the board, the advisory board, as well as other affiliated individuals. They all share their longings, the sometimes rocky path, their commitment, and what participation in the City Monastery means for their lives and faith. This book illustrates in words and images what happens when a monastery emerges in a city and what reformed freedom means in this context.
