Modernisation" is associated with far-reaching processes of social change. In socio-structural terms, this can include individualisation and rationalisation; in normative terms, it is associated with the spread of civil liberties and democracy. How do religious traditions relate to these transformations, by which they are deeply affected, which challenge them and to which they contribute? Using an interdisciplinary method and an interreligious comparison of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, this volume explores the diverse and highly topical relationships between modernity and religion(s) in our society. Special attention is paid to theological reflections and their significance for social and religious transformation.
