In the age of digitalization of film, it seems remarkable that the emergence of its tactile form is not long past. The film on video cassette, which emancipated the viewer from the regulations of cinema and television, not only created a new access to film history but also a completely new space within the media ensemble: the video rental store. In the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1980s, this cultural institution formed a nexus that brought together the new questions of youth protection, film distribution, and alternative media competition, attempting to answer them anew.
