The stone inscriptions from Vindonissa

To date, 101 Roman stone inscriptions are known from the area of ancient Vindonissa.
These speaking stones are presented here for the first time in an annotated catalogue
for the first time.

• Special attention is paid to the locations and circumstances of the inscriptions.

Their analysis
allows us to trace the fate of these important monuments from the time they were
erected until they were rediscovered.

• For the first time, the history of finding, collecting and preserving the inscriptions is traced in an overview.

from the 16th century and the repeated losses of the entire collection since then.

• The stone material for the inscriptions comes predominantly from the neighbouring catchment area

of Vindonissa. In contrast, Jura limestone imported from western Switzerland served as a substitute
for white marble from the Mediterranean.

• Investigations into the shape and size of the dedicatory and funerary inscriptions show that a formal

both groups of monuments show a formal standardisation.
