Emilia Morris's thirteenth birthday, her mother Rachel moves into a tent at the bottom of their garden. From that day on, she never says another word. Eight years later, she and thousands of the followers she has amassed around the world burn themselves to death.

Manipulator. Cult-leader. Murderer.

In the aftermath of what becomes known as the Event, Emilia struggles to find meaning in her mother's actions. Meanwhile, the peaceful protest movement Rachel founded has transformed into a slick, global organisation and Emilia soon discovers just how divisive and dangerous it has become.

The whole world has an opinion about Rachel, but Emilia has never voiced hers publicly until now. Despite escalating threats, Emilia decides to break her silence and write a memoir that will reveal her truth about her mother, and expose just how sinister the Movement has become.

In the process, Emilia must not only confront all aspects of her mother, from heroic martyr to callous monster, but also step out of her shadow once and for all, so that her own voice may finally be heard.
