Der römische Gebäudekomplex von Kaiseraugst-Schmidmatt

Between 1982 and 1987, the ruins of an imperial-era building with a courtyard and a hall structure were uncovered in the area of Kaiseraugst-Schmidmatt. The archaeological site of Kaiseraugst-Schmidmatt, located between the upper and lower towns of Augusta Raurica, is one of the best-preserved non-public Roman building complexes north of the Alps. It is presumed to be an inn and a commercial establishment, likely a fullonica (a textile workshop). A fire in the late 3rd century destroyed the complex. In the 4th century, there was a temporary resettlement of the area. Throughout this time, the location along the long-distance road from Gaul to Raetia remained significant.
