OXFORD IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR: THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF FOUR WOMEN PHILOSOPHERS
Oxford in World War II: even the professors and students are called up for compulsory service. For four young female philosophers, this means freedom: Mac Cumhaill and Wiseman tell the story of how
Elizabeth Amscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and
Iris Murdoch develop a new philosophy over coffee and cookies, in pubs and dining halls, centered on man as a "metaphysical living being." After the war, this "Wartime Quartet" falls into oblivion. Its long overdue rediscovery is an engaging plea to finally understand philosophy as a natural place for women.
The history of European philosophy is the story of the thoughts, visions, hopes, and fears of men who wrote their largely abstract and individualistic theories in the seclusion of the "ivory tower," far from the practical and sometimes chaotic demands of everyday reality. Few people can call a philosopher by name. This book contrasts this situation with the previously unknown story of four young women philosophers: Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch were born shortly after World War I and began their philosophy studies at Oxford University just before World War II. When the male professors and students were drafted, they received instruction from women, conscientious objectors, and refugee scholars. In this environment, they developed a new philosophy of life, love, and beauty as an antidote to the technical, scientistic, and skeptical zeitgeist.
