Design made for men shapes our lives
Our environment has been designed by men for men. In "The Patriarchy of Things," Rebekka Endler opens our eyes to the male-oriented design that surrounds us everywhere. She reveals the sometimes life-threatening consequences this has for women. For example, our Western medicine is geared towards men—except for gynecology: from diagnostic procedures and medical devices to medication dosages. Even crash test dummies are modeled after the male body, affecting the entire car, including airbags and seatbelts. Public spaces are also designed for men: architecture, infrastructure, and transportation, even the number of public restrooms or the temperature settings in buildings.
Who survives a heart attack? Who feels cold at work and for whom is it designed? For whom are technical devices easy to use? Who is the internet for? The patriarchy is the creator and designer of our environment. When we become aware of this, these questions suddenly appear in a new light.
