Product details

This academic book provides a comprehensive examination of the magistri militum, the highest-ranking officers of the late Roman army. It argues that between 340 and 395 AD, certain magistri seized opportunities, particularly during political vacuums following the deaths of emperors, to reshape the role of their office and expand its influence in the military-political sphere. This transformation had a decisive impact on the gradual decline of the Western Roman Empire. The study employs the prosopographic method to question previous research on the distribution of barbarian and Roman generals and demonstrates that the ratio of Roman to non-Roman officers was more equitable than previously assumed. Additionally, the prosopographic analysis is used to reconstruct the cursus honorum of the fourth century. Finally, an analytical framework of social network research is applied to illuminate the complex dynamics of positive and negative relationships. The findings of this study offer valuable insights and perspectives for future research.
