The Ladies on the Hill

"The Ladies on the Hill" is dedicated to the Benedictine convent of St. George in Prague and the women's community alongside the Augustinian canons in Klosterneuburg. This volume discusses the rich heritage of these women's monasteries from historical, art historical, and music historical perspectives. The beginnings of dynastic family formation were often linked to the founding of women's monasteries in medieval Europe. This already indicates the significant political, social, and religious importance of the monasteries for the self-understanding of families, as well as for the intergenerational anchoring of power and influence in the region. Nevertheless, many of the once influential women's communities remain largely unexplored to this day. This is particularly true for the oldest convent in Bohemia, the Benedictine convent of St. George in Prague, which existed for over 1000 years. However, the Klosterneuburg women's community alongside the Augustinian canons has also unjustly fallen into oblivion after its dissolution in 1568.
