Great Britain 1938. For young Rose Blake, Wimbledon is the place where her greatest dream could come true. But the time is not right: According to her parents, and usually it goes according to her parents, Rose is meant to become a good wife and not a professional tennis player. For Henry Evans, Wimbledon is the place where he and Rose have come closer than anywhere else. The two teenagers are worlds apart: Rose, the daughter of a well-to-do family, plays Chopin on the piano and learns French, while Henry, whose mother passed away far too early, belongs to the household staff: He only lives on the estate because his father was hired as a gardener by the Blake family. And yet, life brings Rose and Henry together. He gets to be her ball boy, she teaches him tennis, he takes her for rides on his bicycle. They become friends, they fall in love. Until the war painfully separates them. Henry takes the only path he can think of: He becomes the gardener at Wimbledon – and remains so for fifty years. Always hoping that Rose will return one day.
