The Duden grammar. An analysis of the system with regard to parts of speech

Abstract: This paper examines the Duden, specifically the eighth edition of the fourth volume, in terms of its system and content. Special attention is given to the chapter on word classes, providing an exemplary representation of the content and structure of inflectable word classes. Furthermore, a comparison with the fourth edition of the Duden Grammar will highlight how the system has changed over the course of 25 years.

In the fourth section of the paper, the second chapter on word classes, articles, and pronouns is examined in more detail regarding its content and systematics. The grammar is explained using original examples. Through these investigations, the structure, system, and content of the Duden Grammar will be exemplarily presented.

Finally, a conclusion will be drawn regarding whether, for whom, and why the use of the Duden Grammar is suitable. The Duden is referred to as the standard work on the German language and is composed of twelve volumes: 1. Spelling, 2. Style Dictionary, 3. Picture Dictionary, 4. Grammar, 5. Dictionary of Foreign Words, 6. Pronunciation Dictionary, 7. Etymological Dictionary, 8. Synonym Dictionary, 9. Correct and Good German, 10. Dictionary of Meanings, 11. Idioms, and 12. Quotes and Sayings.
