The Chronicle of Victor of Tunnuna (ca. 565)

A chronicle is more than just a paratactic arrangement of facts. It also tells a story. This is exemplified by the examination of the previously overlooked late antique chronicle of the North African bishop Victor of Tunnuna (circa 565). He reports on events following the Council of Chalcedon (451) and the Second Council of Constantinople (553), with a regional focus on North Africa, particularly concerning the so-called Three Chapters controversy. An analysis of the selection and presentation of individual contributions in the chronicle highlights how Victor of Tunnuna continues the history of the few remaining defenders of the Three Chapters, intertwining it with the history of the martyrs and confessors among the Vandals, and claiming it as part of his own group's past. This analysis arises from the investigation and reassessment of the history of the chronicle text, which particularly considers the Spanish transmission context.
