One morning, sixteen-year-old Thomas Bernhard decides to exchange his hated existence for a more useful one on his way to school. He escapes from school and begins an apprenticeship in a grocery store on the outskirts of Salzburg. In the shabby suburb, in a shop located in the basement, Bernhard encounters the antisocial, criminals, and the outcasts of society – and thus comes to better understand himself.
