War in the Karst The 12 battles of the Isonzo between May 1915 and October 1917 are still deeply engraved in the memory of the peoples involved. The War Museum in Kobarid/Karfreit (Slovenia) attracts well over one hundred thousand visitors every year, 75% of them from Germany and Austria. For eleven battles, the armies of Italy and Austria-Hungary faced each other doggedly in the Karst. The number of dead, wounded and captured soldiers reached the million mark without either side being able to gain more than a few handfuls of ground. It was not until the 12th Battle of the Isonzo that Austria-Hungary, with the help of the German 14th Army, managed a major breakthrough at Flitsch and Tolmein and the advance to the Piave.
