Hundreds of deities adorn the lids and sides of selected sarcophagi and coffins from the 30th Dynasty and the Ptolemaic period, primarily found in Saqqara. Carolina Teotino categorizes these gods into various groups that address the deceased in the form of short speeches. Two nearly parallel objects, the sarcophagi of Djedher and Anchhapi, serve as the starting point for this study and are compared with additional partially unpublished sources. The study primarily addresses questions regarding the origin and function of this decoration, as well as the lineage and titles of the owners of these sarcophagi. A focus is placed on the discourse between the cult of the dead and temple worship, and the form of decoration as a monumental staging of the episodes and rites in the embalming hall. The deities provide the deceased Osiris with protection and assistance in crisis situations, whether during mummification, the hourly watch, burial, resurrection, or rebirth. Their speeches protect against potential dangers while simultaneously articulating the goal of continuing to live in the afterlife. The results show that some of these groups of gods can be traced back to the Middle Kingdom, while others only appear in the spaces dedicated to the Osiris cult in Greek-Roman temples. The speeches are partially compiled as excerpts from well-known Osirian compositions from temple and funerary contexts.
