Dance has always been an integral part of hip-hop culture, yet it remained underrepresented in literature for a long time. Through extensive interviews with dancers from Germany and the USA, this book provides a thorough examination of the three classic dance forms. Starting from the history of their emergence, it traces the culture and its dances through the phase of international establishment in the 1990s - the Golden Era of Hip-Hop - and also reflects on their development. The discussions are embedded in detailed descriptions of hip-hop elements such as DJing, rapping/MCing, graffiti/writing, as well as analyses of scene-specific attitudes and forms of communication, socio-political background information, and an exploration of the current urban dance scene. The author, a hip-hop dancer since the early 1990s, paints a complex picture of hip-hop and dance culture.
