Technical mechanics is an ancient science that was already significant in classical antiquity. For instance, Archimedes (285 - 212 BC) studied the pulley and formulated the laws of levers. The law of buoyancy is now known as Archimedes' principle. In the Middle Ages, many technical inventions were introduced by Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519), which still shape the field of engineering today. Engineers today design machines and systems, build or operate them, and require knowledge from technical mechanics for this purpose. Within engineering sciences, mechanical engineering distinguishes between the subfields of statics, dynamics, and strength of materials. As foundational subjects, these areas form the basis for understanding machine and plant construction as well as civil engineering. The contents of the book are aligned with the curricula of technical schools (engineering schools) specializing in mechanical engineering, as well as with the curricula of technical high schools focusing on mechanical engineering.
