In Japan, team teaching of English language courses has been a growing phenomenon since the late 1980s. Typically, two teachers are involved in team teaching: a Japanese English teacher who holds a university degree in English or education and has a teaching qualification, and an English assistant teacher, who is usually an untrained university graduate from the UK, the United States, or another country where the majority of citizens are native English speakers. The goal of team teaching is to improve the English skills of Japanese students by having an English-speaking assistant serve as a role model for the target language in the classroom. These assistants are often popular among students, their parents, and administrative staff, primarily because they are seen as motivating for language learning. Japanese teachers may also appreciate assistants, especially as colleagues with whom the workload can be shared. However, there are also issues that are sometimes overlooked in superficial discussions about team teaching. This book describes the origins of team teaching in relation to the development of English as a lingua franca.
