Product details

True crimes from the Middle Ages to World War II. Cologne was for centuries the largest city in Germany and for a time - alongside Paris - the most significant city in Europe: a trading metropolis, an art metropolis, a pilgrimage site. In the mid-19th century, Cologne was one of the first major cities in Prussia. It’s no surprise that such a historically rich city had its darker sides: offenses, persecutions, crimes. "Witches, Forgers, Revolutionaries" depicts important events such as the uprising against Archbishop Anno II in 1074, the pogrom against Jews in 1349, the execution of the "witch" Katharina Henot in 1627, the story of the rebel Nikolaus Gülich, or the revolution of 1848. It also recounts lesser-known cases: for example, the story of a forger from the 16th century who primarily targeted monasteries, or that of the first informant of the Cologne police, who operated in the early 19th century.
