Product details

This book describes the change in the concept of choreography that has taken place through the practice of improvisation in 20th century artistic dance. Improvisational methods characterize the works of contemporary choreographers who decisively shaped the aesthetics of dance at the end of the 20th century, such as Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, William Forsythe, Amanda Miller or Jonathan Burrows, to name but a few. The central question of the investigation is not only how improvisation in dance is dealt with in the course of the 20th century, but above all how the forms arise in an improvisation and which structures are responsible for the forms. The aim of the study is to differentiate the practice and concept of artistic dance improvisation on the one hand, and to uncover the emergence of improvisation on the other.
