Take Care: Kunst und Medizin

What is the motivation behind organizing an exhibition dedicated to medicine, illness, health, and recovery in the midst of a pandemic? Is there not a risk of confronting people with a complex of themes that they are already overwhelmed with from public discourse? Admittedly, it is a challenging endeavor to bring together other images beyond the same recurring dominant ones. This pressing topic aims to contribute an informative and lively discussion in a time that is already being referred to as a turning point in history. The approximately 100 artists from three centuries invite us on an exploratory journey of corporeality, illness, pain, and healing, which is intended to spread a rather optimistic mood. Or, to put it in the words of participating dancer Anna Halprin, who herself has been affected by illness: “The body is living art. Your movement through time and space is art. A painter has brushes. You have your body.”.
