The anonymous 11 to 14-year-old student of a high school in Vienna from a respectable background wrote a diary around 1902. In it, she painted a picture of a flourishing era of the Austrian Empire, in which representatives of the nobility, officers, and the bourgeoisie lived in ample prosperity. However, society at that time was exceedingly prudish. The girl's family fate is particularly poignant, as her beloved mother dies of cancer when the child is 14 years old, and her revered and loving father passes away a year later. Children in puberty grew up without any sexual education back then. Especially girls were often left helpless regarding menstruation, eroticism, sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy. This is why Sigmund Freud was also very taken with these texts, as he encountered this prudishness everywhere in his psychotherapeutic efforts as a cause of mental illnesses.
