In 1980, Reclam published for the first time a selection from the secret diary of Samuel Pepys in German language. The book was a surprising success; the Darmstadt jury selected it as "Book of the Month" and Chancellor Helmut Schmidt took it to Brahmsee as holiday reading. Pepy's "Diary", written between 1660 and 1669, is one of the treasures of English literature. In it, he wrote down with brilliant pen what he experienced as a London citizen in this eventful time of English history and there was nothing he was not interested in: politics, of course, theatre and music, literature and sermons, but also good food and women. Pepys depicts everyday life in the metropolis with an unbiased view, and transmits at first hand important events of his time.
