Product details

In 1980, Reclam published a selection from the secret diary of Samuel Pepys in German for the first time. The book became a surprising success; the Darmstadt jury chose it as the "Book of the Month." Chancellor Helmut Schmidt took it along as vacation reading. Pepys' diary, kept from 1660 to 1669, is one of the treasures of English literature. In it, he has brilliantly recorded what he experienced as a London citizen during this eventful period of English history. There was nothing he was not interested in: politics, theater and music, literature and sermons, as well as good food and women. Pepys describes everyday life in the metropolis with an unfiltered perspective and provides a close-up account of significant events of his time.
