14th revised edition 2018. The systems engineering concept of the BWI at ETH Zurich quickly established itself as a standard methodology for the systematic handling of complex projects in industry, services, and administration shortly after its first publication in 1972, for example, in product development, process, organization, facility, and information technology planning. The success of the SE concept is based on a few applicable fundamental principles as well as simple, comprehensible, and adaptable approaches that are intended to be understandable not only to highly qualified specialists but also to as many professionals as possible working on various projects. The compactness and clear structure of the methodology convinced numerous educational institutions and companies to adopt this concept. The proven SE concept was completely revised for the 12th edition (2012) under the leadership of R. Haberfellner (formerly BWI/ETH, now TU Graz) with O. de Weck (MIT), E. Fricke (BMW Group), and S. Vössner (TU Graz). Notable updates in this edition included agile concepts (agile systems engineering), which facilitate subsequent changes in results and processes, and the previously unused approach of system architecture. The 14th edition (2018) has been revised both in content and language. A third case study (Smart City and Science Tower Graz) has been added. For didactic reasons, knowledge and comprehension questions have been formulated for each chapter to validate one's own knowledge and understanding and to encourage a deeper engagement with the topic. The questions are answered at the end of the book. Additionally, agile concepts and their characteristics are discussed in greater detail. The encyclopedia of methods and techniques has been adapted to the new possibilities of information acquisition. The work has been developed as a textbook for higher education and postgraduate teaching.
