This book is aimed at those leaders who want to better understand the fundamental nature of the organizations in which they operate. The organizations of a modern society are largely highly complex systems that we cannot understand and explain in detail as machines, as is commonly done, but much better in analogy to organisms. They cannot be fully understood, explained, designed, or controlled in detail. They have their own laws and are controlled not only by goals but, above all, by rules. However, the inevitable renunciation of detailed design and control does not lead to a reduction in managerial possibilities and capabilities; on the contrary, the system-appropriate application of rules opens up new and better opportunities for managing complex systems. Only through this approach can we achieve that.
