Sylt

Sylt, often referred to as the queen of the German North Sea islands, is subject to a constant transformation of its landscape. Its west coast is particularly exposed to strong marine erosion. This has only been stabilized by the planting of dunes in the 19th century and the current sand replenishments. Nevertheless, the geological development of the island is not complete. Not only natural forces but also human activity have significantly influenced the landscape of Sylt and thoroughly changed it through mass tourism. Dirk Meier, an established scientist in geoarchaeological and historical coastal research, analyzes the closely linked landscape development and settlement history of Sylt in this book, which is richly illustrated with maps, photos, and graphics, based on several time slices derived from geoarchaeological and historical studies.
