Uelzen

Uelzen is today primarily known far beyond its city limits for the Hundertwasser train station. However, the city on the Ilmenau River also boasts a history of over a thousand years. Its central location, along with agriculture—especially the cultivation of sugar beets and their processing in the sugar factory—brought a certain prosperity to Uelzen, which is reflected in both the cityscape and the daily lives of its residents. With around 200 informatively commented photographs and postcards, Horst Hoffmann, editor of the "Heidewanderers" - the local supplement of the Allgemeine Zeitung - traces the life and activities in the city on the Ilmenau. The images he has compiled from public archives and private collections showcase the development of Uelzen from around 1900 to the recent past, with a particular focus on memorable events.
