Gera 1900 bis 1940

The Gera photographer Paul Hermann Uhlmann (1869-1945) was one of the most well-known studio photographers in the city during the first decades of the last century. Countless residents of Gera had club and family photos, portraits, wedding, and children's pictures taken by him. Since his extensive negative archive is considered lost, other images of his were largely unknown, with a few exceptions. Thanks to a donation from his grandson Klaus Uhlmann, the Gera city archive has been in possession of a collection of around 170 photographs by Paul Hermann Uhlmann since 2007, which show that he was much more than just a studio photographer. With a keen eye for interesting subjects, Uhlmann captured numerous well-known and lesser-known views of the city and significant events in often striking quality during his nearly four decades of work. Klaus Brodale, the head of the city archive, has curated this collection.
