Surselva

The Surselva, meaning "above the forest" in German, along with the Ruinaulta, the Flims landslide area, stretches from Versam/Safiental in the east to the Oberalppass in the west. This area is also referred to as the Grisons Oberland or the Vorder Rhine Valley.

On both sides of the main valley with its terrace villages, high-altitude trails offer magnificent views of the slopes, valley cuts, and peaks. In the side valleys, with their alpine pastures and high plateaus, as well as streams and mountain passes, there are hikes of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The routes showcase the full diversity of the largest region in Graubünden: in lower areas, the river meadows along the Vorder Rhine with the Rhine gorge and the sacred landscapes of Val Lumnezia (Lugnez) and Cadi, the area between Breil/Brigels and Disentis/Mustér with the monastery as a landmark; in higher areas, the Greina high plateau, the Val Frisal with the primeval spruce forest Scatlè, and the glacier worlds around Tödi, Oberalpstock, and Piz Medel. Above the tree line, extensive alpine pastures and habitats for deer, chamois, and ibex can be found, as well as, for some time now, lynx and wolves.

Most villages in the Surselva are accessible by train or post bus. While hiking, one experiences the traditional cultural landscape, reflecting the rich history of the predominantly Romansh-speaking population, as well as that of the Walser who migrated centuries ago.
