Feelings are generally regarded as mental states that can be located in a hidden inner world of the subject or in their brain. This contrasts with a conception of embodiment that understands feelings as phenomena that connect self and world in a bodily resonance. From this perspective, intersubjectivity does not begin with an isolated self that must find its way to others, but rather with interaffectivity. This establishes primary, intercorporeal relationships as well as lasting bonds with other people. Through examples of numerous feelings such as empathy, trust, shame, hatred, and grief, Thomas Fuchs develops a new view of our affective connection to the world in his book.
