Suhrkamp Theorie

Suhrkamp's Theory Book Series was published for 20 years, from 1966 to 1986. The publisher included over 200 titles in the series, among them foundational texts of the humanities and cultural sciences: Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Habermas' Knowledge and Human Interests, Althusser's For Marx, Mauss' The Gift, Bourdieu's On the Sociology of Symbolic Forms, Searle's Speech Acts, Foucault's The Archaeology of Knowledge, and Knorr-Cetina's The Manufacture of Knowledge. Using archival materials, conversations, and readings, Morten Paul reconstructs the emergence of the series against the backdrop of the question of the societal relevance of theoretical texts: How does theory relate to the practice that gives it form as text, book, series? How does this form determine the societal impact of theory? And why did this series ultimately have to fail in light of the successes of edition suhrkamp and suhr?.
