Product details

The Great Transformation, published in 1944, is based on the thesis that it was only the emergence of a liberal market economy with its "free play of forces" that led to the characteristic "detachment" and autonomy of the economy from society, which historically represents a novelty and distinguishes bourgeois society from all other social formations. The Great Transformation refers to the transition from "integrated" societies, where individuals' economic activities were embedded in an overarching cultural context, to the non-integrated society of the type of a free market economy.
