In June 1804, Karoline von Günderrode and Heinrich von Kleist are invited to a tea gathering in Winkel am Rhein – a fictional encounter. Christa Wolf brings together these sensitive poets, both outsiders, to reflect on the lack of freedom, on an unlivable life, and reveals the parallels to her own present. Published in 1979, the book brings us close to two individuals who are on the verge of despair within the system they are trapped in, yet they know: "If we stop hoping, what we fear will surely come." The title of this modern classic has long become a proverbial expression: In 'No Place. Nowhere,' Christa Wolf narrates the feelings of those who are backed against the wall, while simultaneously envisioning a reality where the boundaries between individuals, genders, and between reality and utopia blur.
