Author's Text
Roland Barthes was born on November 12, 1915, in Cherbourg and died on March 26, 1980, in Paris as a result of a traffic accident. He lost his father early in World War I and moved with his mother from Bayonne in southwestern France to Paris in 1924, where he received his education at the Lycée Montaigne (1924-1930) and later at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand (1930-1934). After graduating from high school, he studied Classical Literature at the Sorbonne starting in 1934 and, as a theater enthusiast, co-founded a student group for ancient theater that performed classical plays in their original languages. Barthes' promising academic career was frequently interrupted due to repeated severe bouts of pulmonary tuberculosis until 1947, which ultimately led to one of his lungs not recovering. He completed his academic degree in 1939 in Classical Literature with a thesis on Greek tragedy. In Essais critiques, Barthes deals with avant-garde theater. Influential figures for him included Brecht, Gide, Marx, de Saussure, and Jacques Lacan. Additionally, Barthes was passionate about music, particularly as a pianist and composer.
Blurb
In "The Bright Chamber," the focus is not on photography (as an act of creation), but on the photograph itself, a fascination that wants to be perceived, seen, and looked at as an image. And those who look as closely as Roland Barthes see in the photo a symbol of immortality, perceive it as magic and alchemy, recognize both the delusional motif of the doppelgänger and the still clarity of the haiku, and ultimately even see the abstract body part as expression—this unheard-of transition from body to soul—animula.
