Fifty years ago, the American first edition of The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath's only novel, was published - four weeks later, Plath took her own life. Her novel soon became a cult classic, as it described like no other book before it the emotional state of young women and their inner turmoil in the face of societal expectations. "It was a crazy, sultry summer, the summer the Rosenbergs went to the electric chair and I didn't know what I really wanted in New York": Nineteen-year-old Esther wins a four-week internship at a fashion magazine in New York, complete with party invitations and promotional gifts. However, Esther, a once-ambitious student, struggles to adapt to the work environment and cannot enjoy the city's temptations. She feels as if she is living under a glass jar, increasingly separating her from everything.
