In April 2014, a commando from the terrorist organization Boko Haram attacked the village of Chibok in northeastern Nigeria and abducted 276 schoolgirls from the local boarding school. A global outcry ensued. Under the hashtag "Bring Back Our Girls," public figures like Michelle Obama and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai expressed their outrage. The fate of the Chibok schoolgirls is not an isolated case. To this day, thousands of women remain in the hands of the Islamists. In July 2015, Zeit reporter Wolfgang Bauer traveled to Nigeria to speak with girls who had managed to escape. They share their lives before their abduction, their harrowing experiences during captivity, and their dreams for a better future.
