Der Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf is the book by Hermann Hesse that triggered the international renaissance of its author. As early as 1927, Kurt Pinthus wrote: "I am reading Steppenwolf, the most merciless and soul-wrenching of all confession books, darker and wilder than Rousseau's Confessions, the cruelest celebration of birth ever performed by a poet himself."

It tells the story of an anarchist who, filled with raging anger at this misguided existence, wants to smash department stores and cathedrals and turn the bourgeois world order on its head. It is about a revolutionary of the self. Steppenwolf is a work of anti-bourgeois courage.
