New York in the 1940s: While war rages in Europe, Hertz Minsker, a self-proclaimed philosopher, bon vivant, and chronic bankrupt, seeks his fortune in America. Bronja, his fourth wife, has left her husband and children in Warsaw for him. Now, the two of them are struggling to get by. They receive support from Morris Calisher, a childhood friend who has become wealthy through real estate. However, he is unaware that Hertz has long been having a passionate affair with his wife Minna.

The charlatan paints a vivid picture of the lives of emigrated Jews in 1940s New York, which, despite its bleak undertones, continually offers moments filled with joy and love.
